Advanced Domestic Abuse Training

Who is the training for?

This remote training will benefit frontline and other professionals who already have a good awareness and understanding of domestic abuse and wish to enhance their skills and knowledge. Ideally suited to staff development days.

This training is suitable for whole teams or individuals. Those wishing to join as an individual may need to wait until we have sufficient numbers to run a session.

Content of training:

The trauma-informed response

A look at what is meant by a phrase at risk of becoming a clichรฉ. The purpose and application of a trauma-informed response in practice, and the benefits and barriers to this approach.

Underpinning theories

Exploring recent research on the theoretical perspectives to explain domestic abuse and why it happens, and the considerations for daily practice.

Evidence-based practice

We look at the definition of evidence-based and best practice, and discuss how to ensure your knowledge stays current.

Reflective practice

What is reflective practice, what is the evidence for its effectiveness, and how can it improve daily practice?

Taboo wounds

How to hear and support experiences that are considered taboo in our society and therefore difficult to talk about. A look at how to honour such experience whilst also safeguarding the victim and ourselves.

The self as wounded healer

The final section of this training discusses the concept of the wounded healer, and the importance of reflecting on past trauma to ensure unresolved issues are not projected to others in the workplace. We also discuss the importance of self-care. Personal disclosures are discouraged, instead we explore hypothetical experiences connected to the human experience

Learning Objectives

To provide delegates with new perspectives to think about and explore, continuing their development as practitioners, including an awareness and understanding of trauma-informed responses, the theories that can be used to explain domestic abuse, the benefits of evidence-based and reflective practice, opening dialogue around taboo wounds, and understanding the self as a wounded healer.
